Working at TSP has made me realize that I should pursue a career path that I love and that I shouldn’t be settling for any less.
I grew as a leader as I learned to manage staff and teach and inspire youth, but I also grew as an engineer in ways that university courses could never teach us. I learned technical skills across engineering disciplines and was actually given the opportunity to hone and apply them. I learned that being creative is okay, which is never taught in such a technical discipline, and that it’s okay to make mistakes in the real world as long as we learn and grow from them.
If you met me on the first day, I would’ve been unrecognizable compared to the person I became. STEAM really cracked my shell.
I feel like this camp is the reason I have the confidence to be around people I’ve never met. As a camper, I was usually the one that wouldn’t have anyone to talk to, but as a counsellor I was given the opportunity to help campers like me to step out of their comfort zone. I was thrilled to be a part of the STEAM Project family this summer – I watched the staff video every day until university started because I wanted to remember the summer for just a little longer.
Before finding The STEAM Project, I struggled to find a job that combined my creativity, hands-on experience, and love for teaching.
When working at an engineering firm, I felt disconnected from my work, but I love that I am intimately connected to what I work on at The STEAM Project. Here, I feel empowered to do fulfilling, self-directed work – My ideas are always listened to and supported, and I am given the tools to succeed. I love being surrounded by energetic, positive people who challenge and inspire me. Being a program director at camp helped me grow as a leader and team member.
There are so many cool gadgets and technologies available for the campers and staff to experiment with at the STEAM Project.
The best part is teaching the campers the basics of the equipment, and then watching them make creative and intricate things. Seeing the campers walk out every day with a smile on their faces and projects in hand never failed to make my day.
TSP was a very lively working environment. Through my placement, I made many friends who inspired me to work harder.
I learned many new hard skills and gained experience with a variety of different technologies. The staff at The STEAM Project are like a family. One time, my coworkers noticed a change in my attitude and checked up on me. It meant a lot to me that they cared and saw me as a friend.
